In mid-2021, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) announced an ambitious competition to develop the next generation of LED Illumination, optimized for the commercial building lighting sector. The DoE’s objective is to dramatically reduce energy consumption in these structures, which currently account for approximately 37% of U.S. lighting energy. The competition is known as the L-Prize. It is a follow-on to the first L-Prize competition in 2011, which revolutionized the entire lighting industry with the introduction of LED light bulbs.
This first phase of the three-part L-Prize Competition required developing an intelligent luminaire system capable of achieving uncompromising energy efficiency and quality of light metrics, along with integrated semi-autonomous lighting strategies, direct communication with grid-interactive utilities to gather/process “spot pricing” signals, granular diagnostics and fault determination, a robust networked architecture, and more. Over 300 innovators and 30 global teams competed in the challenge. MagiCode teamed with QuarkStar, a deep tech startup dedicated to LED lighting.
In February 2022, we were honored as U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm personally announced the MagiCode-QuarkStar entry, “Project Tango”, as one of the L-Prize Phase-1 winners.
